Festival review: Amnesia Rockfest 2014 (june 20-21 - 2014)

(english version will follow)

Invasions Barbares

Mes prestations internationales :
Meshuggah
Five Finger Death Punch
Mastodon
Megadeth

On se revoit l’an prochain à coup sûr !

Barbarian invasions

200 000 filthlings. Sums up pretty much the plethora of lovely adjectives overheard by my humble self in the last few days following the Amnesia Rockfest 2014. A bunch of lousy dirty barbarians assaulting the defenseless village of Montebello once again. «Yeah, but you are a girl! Aren’t you afraid to go there by yourself with all these libidinous drunk dudes just walking in the streets? I bet cops can’t do much against all these people! » And my answer is, as always, a fine tune between laughter and great sadness when I hear –yet again- such kind of comments from people who probably will never set foot in a rock/metal festival. Your mission, should you accept it, my fellow metalheads, is to educate.
First off, being a woman (not a fan of the term girl, really), I never felt safer than amongst my 200 000 barbarian brothers and sisters, not all of them drunk. Libidinous? Meh, maybe. I didn’t personally take the time to check. Nevertheless, it changes nothing to the fact that the reputation bestowed upon us stands closer to urban legends than actual observable facts. The Rockfest is first and foremost a cultural endeavor to keep alive a genre of music that is often overlooked and stigmatized by a majority of our society that promotes order and conformity. It is also hundreds of merchants, members of the organization committee, musicians, sound, lighting and stage technicians, press relations and media that combine their efforts and talents to put together a memorable and positive experience for everyone while making a career for themselves. Bottom line, it creates jobs and is fun at the same time.
And those villagers kept hostage by our untrustworthy bunch? Well they participated just like they do every year, villagers whom I’d like to personally thank for providing us with morning coffee, sweets and bakes, showers, backyards to put out tents and driveways to park our cars. This fest is also theirs and their participation reminds me that not every soul over fifty in the province is out to close all metal and rock music festivals and that it is possible to celebrate all our cultures in a respectful and understanding manner.
I would also like to tip my hat to everyone behind the organization of the Rockfest for the obvious improvement of the on-site sanitary installations and stages location. You have listened to your fans and should expect to see them in greater numbers next year. Thank you, most of all, for doing what you do for us weirdos, misfits and music fans, for inviting the cream of the most brutal crop.
Speaking of which, here are my “horns up” for the 2014 edition of the Amnesia Rockfest :
Local noise:

Obliveon
Insurrection
Mass Murder Messiah
I couldn’t attend the Anonymus show, but I am absolutely convinced that should I have been there, they would be on this list.

International noise:

Meshuggah
Five Finger Death Punch
Mastodon
Megadeth
Cradle of Filth

My “flat notes”:

Having to charge my phone three times a day, runing to and fro to find a power plug. Next year I am duck taping a dozen power packs around my belt.
My media bracelet didn’t allow access to the same areas depending on the security agent I spoke to.
Some had purchased parking spaces and were told that they had lost their place because double the space available was sold. No refund. They ended up having to buy a second parking space in another location.
Certain members of the Mötley crew (not the band, the actual crew) who could afford a cup of chamomile before shows.
Personal thumbs up:

Pulled pork poutine and charcoal grilled chicken. Best investment for my 10 bucks.
Going back to the camping site at 2 AM and realizing how many awesome music fans we actually are.
Families of Montebello who bake muffins and cookies and prepare coffee for days and sell them on their front lawn all weekend long. You guys play a great part in the Rockfest experience and are greatly responsible for my general good mood when I show up on site every year. Thanks!
Looking back on last weekend, I can say without a doubt that I had a great time, maybe even more than last year. I saw real improvement and a better organization. I am also glad to see that once more the Amnesia Rockfest has given a good visibility to our metal scene.
See you all next year!

Concert Review: Biohazard (live in Montréal, Qc, Canada june 27th 2014)

Biohazard avec Brick by Brick, Borrowed Time, Harriers, T.N.S. et Nuke live au Foufounes Électriques- 27/06/14

English review will follow

Vrai bon show.

Borrowed Time

James - Guitare
Brendan - Basse
Dave - Guitare
Chris - Voix
Dave - Batterie

Brick by Brick

Mike Valente - Guitare
Sean Green - Basse
Rich Roberts - Voix
James Muller - Batterie

Conclusion

Cheers!

Biohazard with Brick by Brick, Borrowed Time, Harriers, T.N.S. and Nuke live at the Foufounes Électrique- 27/06/14

Hey what's up metalheads, \m/iki Dom for Quebec Metal, There as always to review this  most amazing hardcore metal « soirée ». Night that features a band that went through many changes either on the music side than the line up side. I'm of course talking about Brooklyn's Biohazard! Accompanied by 5 other bands as hardcore and brutal as they can be. This event was creating a lot of anticipation in me, couldnt be anything other than interesting that's for sure! We only had to see how this musical stew would present itself but most importantly how it would go!

Nuke

Tony Frenchman - Guitar
Victor Beaudoin - Guitar
Élie Bérard Faubert - Bass
Shawn Leger - Drums
Simon H. Diamond - Vox

I couldnt wait to see what this Montréal's own band would look like live because i really liked their 2012 demo... A brutal but festive hardcore, but it is also obvious that these guys dont have a lot of stage experience but they still deliver the goods! It's rowchy, it knocks your socks off! Everything that we can ask for it's there! Give them a couple more years and these guys will be exactly where they want to be whatever that may be! Can't wait to see them again!

Harriers

Bine Robusto / Vocals
Chris Riopel / Bass
Kev Norm / Drums
Thomas Jans / Guitar
Eric Langlois-Gervais / Guitar

Harriers is according to me the best hardocre band in Montréal. These guys wail! Each of their 4 Eps are excellent... and the announcement of a first complete Lp made a very happy man out of me! A very technical band that have fun brutalising their fans! 5 friends that are there for one another... Near the end of the concert, bassist Chris Riopel lost his strap and twice not to mention... and both times singer Bino Robusto went to him and reattached it for him... a gesture which i qualify of bro move... Really good show... these guys are ready for the next step

T.N.S.

This band leaves me rather indifferent... They do nothing for me... nothing sticks out of the straight road... and not to mention that they have absolutly no info about their band on the internet...

MESSAGE TO THE BAND : If you want us to talk about you give us acces to some infos. Often we don't have time to go talk to you to learn you history, names etc... and the possibility to create easily accessible and free internet page is available to you. So i'm sorry but if you don't take the time to do those simple things to promote your band well it's only natural that us the medias won't bother talking about you...  Nothing left to say

Borrowed Time

James- Guitar
Brendan- Bass
Dave- Guitar
Chris- Vox
Dave- Drums

The first thing to say about Borrowed Time is... WHAT AN ENERGY!!!! For these guys their music is more than a passion it's their blood, their souls and everything else that they put on the table each night! An incredibly talented lead guitarist, a more than passionate singer... a brutal and heavy sound... An amazing performance from our friends from New-York... definitly a must see!

Brick by Brick

Mike Valente-Guitare
Sean Green - Basse
Rich Roberts - Voix
James Muller - Batterie

Brick by Brick is a name that we hear since a couple of years ago already... This band hailing from Troy, Albany doesn't need to prove itself anymore, a brute sound, a structured and intelligent hardcore. I love singer Rich Robert's attitude that is provocative and friendly at the same time! This giant man wouldnt have to worry if things would turn against him:) but this most kind man is only doing his job... Excellent band, excellent show. I always loved Brick by Brick and it carries on

Biohazard

Bobby Hambel - Guitar
Billy Graziadei -Guitar et Vox
Danny Schuler - Drums
Scott Roberts – Bass et Vox

I was really impatient to see Biohazard again live, last time was so many years ago! Always as kind and energetic i love this band! Bobby Hambel is such a kind and passionate man and especially towards his fans! He lets people take pictures with him and even right before the show, he talks to them etc... it's so cool! Billy Graziadei, the young rebel without limits, not so young anymore but still breaths revolution and his fight the power attitude for the hay day of the band. It's easy to fall into stereotypes in this industry but not Biohazard... They were always true to themselves all along their now more than 20 years long career. A very memorable concert that pleased the fans and my 15 years old heart that used to listen to this band with the heart filled desire to conquer the world et make his mark in this world filled with false advertising and materialism... A great journey through time and out of this world concert!

Conclusion

In my opinion 6 bands in one night is a big order... A lot of planning and not to mention that the show did start an hour late but they managed to pull through since Biohazard took the stage only 40 minutes late. A great night that pleased the fans even with many technical problems and a sound technician that wasn't very good but this concert was still a great event!

On this it was, \m/iki Dom, thanks for reading my column and stay metalheads

Cheers!
