Concert review: Megadeth live in Quebec City (march 24th 2016)

(English will follow)

Megadeth avec Children of Bodom & Havok, (24 mars 2015)

Megadeth with Children of Bodom & Havok (march 24th 2016)

Last Thursday evening I attended the show of Megadeth at Videotron Centre, which incidentally is the only show in Québec for the band and the last show of the tour Dystopia. For those who remember, Megadeth had given a show on the Plaines d’Abraham last summer for the Festival d’Été de Québec. We had the right, as a premiere, seeing for the first time the guitarist Kiko Loureiro. Thursday night, true tohis reputation, Dave Mustaine spoiled us with quality opening bands.

Havok is the band that opened the hostilities, playing a old school speed- Thrash with early 80 Slayers influences. This is a band that I discovered in the last years and I have had several chances to see in Montreal. David Sanchez and his group managed to set the crowd on fire. The evening was well underway and many fans have been already well served. We were ready for more ...
It was against a little strange to see their show from the bleachers, it lacks a little something ...

After a brief intermission, the Finns Children of Bodom came to pay tribute to Quebec admirers and they did that well playing before a conquered crowd. Cob came sprinkle us with its almost surgical music; playing a mixture of Thrash, Power, Death and melodic metal. The more and more numerous crowd was going wild in the mosh pit. The band has brought us to a higher level.  We even had a little speech in French from bassist, Henkka Sappälä, thanking us for our presence at the end of the show.

For people who know me, I am not an ardent admirer of Megadeth although I saw the band more than twenty times since the beginning of their careers. For cons, the show I attended last Thursday was a high quality one. It had a near-perfect sound quality, but also the undeniable talent of the group's musicians, the quartet Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, Kiko Loureiro and Chris Adler. These have proved to me that they are musicians of great talent and great musical dexterity. The rhythm section played by David Adler is precise as a metronome. What about Dave and Kiko’s guitar solos which gave pleasure to our ear all evening long.  As a bonus, Dave Mustaine was cheerful and very talkative which allowed several interactions with the crowd. He was different to what he usually accustomed us to.

My only small criticism is perhaps the choice of songs (I would have preferred more old material) but again, even parts of the new album were making resonate the Videotron Center structures. We had the added bonus of the piece “à tout le monde”, a song that had not been played during this tour, so it was a little gift for her French fans.

Thursday night, Quebec metalheads were treated to a great metal evening, nothing better to counter the raging winter outside!!!

Talamyus - Honour Is Our Code, Death Is the Reward (2016)

Le groupe :
Benoît St-Jean - Guitare et voix
Dany St-Jean - Basse
Nikolai Olekhnovitch - Guitare
Etienne Gallo - Drums

Les chansons:
01 - Vitcory of Valhalla
02 - Blood Eagle
03 - Loki’s Punishment
04 - Hall of the Bravest Souls
05 - Honour to Wotan
06 - Nine Nights (Odin’s Sacrifice)
07 - Abode of Myst (instrumental)
08 - Jormungand
09 - Bring the Weak to Their Knees
10 - I Bow to No Man
11 - Until Death, We Ride

Fort de 3 albums dont: As Long as it Flows (2005)…In These Days of Violence (2007) et l’excellent album qu’est Raven’s Call to Annihilation (2011).

Talamyus - Is Our Honor Code, Death Is the Reward (2016)

Talamyus is not new on the Quebec metal scene, it emerged in 2002 and officiates in a mix of Viking Metal and Black Death Metal of excellent quality. Having played with the greatest of this style and more,Talamyus has built a strong reputation and even an expertise with its previous compositions.

With three albums such as: As Long as it Flows (2005) - ... In These Days of Violence (2007) and the excellent album is Raven's Call to Annihilation (2011), it took 5 years for the album Honour is Our Code, Death is the Reward to finally see the day. I had a chance to hear the flanges of this new offspring in early 2015, so I already knew that the album would be epic and with extraordinary complexity. But I now have the finished product in my hands so let's dissect it all piece by piece now.

It begins with the song Victory of Valhalla, a really epic song with its 10 minutes on the clock. It has an acoustic start. We can almost say it’s a spoken hymn which is very atmospheric and still has good rhythm is a strong piece of work. On the side of the voice, we can easily appreciate the mixture between the song warrior scream and clear voice. Despite that the song is long, which is not usual for an album like this, no dead time is present. More melodic moments are part of this song and are really tasty. You could say the band hits hard with that first song. The band members demonstrate their talents and we feel like we won’t get bored with the rest of the album. Blood Eagle returns with speed and with a certain darkness. The voice is highly perched, powerful and heavy at the same time. On the side of the drums, there is blast beat like desired and it has power out of the ordinary. On the guitar side, it has a great mixture of brutality but also of melody. Loki's Punishment begins with more strength, almost in a Doom Metal style with a nice smooth guitar. But you will have already guessed, since the band is not Doom, it returns quickly to its original style with fast and highly dynamic rhythmical. In the piece, there are several changes of pace but always well done. A sublime and tasty piece to listen. Hall of the Bravest Souls is somewhat epic in duration. Again, it is an excellent mix between heavy and melodic rhythms on the side of the guitar. The voice is still dark and highly perched almost in a growl, but audible. The clearer back vocals brings backs some majestic component. There is acoustic guitar at some places in the songs. All ingredients are there for a perfect record and a pleasant listening. Honour to Wotan begins with an introduction of a warrior who probably cries out for Odin. The guitar is melodious with an almost cinematic shading. We could almost think that it is a ballad so the rhythm is slow. But heaviness suddenly takes off mixing scream and clearer but fat vocals . This deep voice reminds me of Peter Steele from Type O Negative, but of course it’s my own interpretation. Again the melody goes perfectly with a much faster pace and dark at once. On the guitar side, it is the same, you may be entitled to a bawdy frantic rhythm and then come back with much more melodious riffs. Nine Nights (Odin's Sacrifice) is much faster and has a Black, dark and highly perch but very dynamic voice . It has great change of pace from slow and high speed. Abode of Myst is a completely instrumental piece and is very short with its two minutes on the clock but it is really charming. I might say it’s a semi acoustic piece that takes us briskly toward Jormungang song. We are back to the dark and fast metal that Talamyus presented us from the beginning of the album. Here we still have the right to a good mix of vocal singing with warrior screams and dark voice. There is good blast beat as well. Everything is there. Bring the Weak to Their Knees continues in the launch of speed and uncompromisingly. Again, the guitarist shows us all his talent with the pace mixture from brutal to melodious. There are several changes of rhythm in this song which is extremely well thought out. I Bow to No Man is the penultimate song of the album and yet, we have no respite. It is heavy at will and there are several changes of pace on this last piece. If you listen carefully to the song, you will feel its black 'n roll side at certain places which is not unpleasant. The album ends with the song Until Death, We Ride. What a way to finish an album with a powerful ,dark and extremely heavy song. A custom cut piece for the stage, so prepare yourself for headbanging at will.

It is not easy to criticize this album not because it is bad, but rather because it's an album with several variants. It is sometimes melodic, sometimes brutal and fast, peeping between Black and Death Metal and sometime even has more progressive passages. Talamyus took three years to bring us a well worked album. Some pieces are really long and we never feel a dead moment or a loss of momentum in the mood and pace of the compositions. The guitar is very powerful and melodic at the same time. On the side of the drums, we easily feel the fast but in control rhythm. The back vocals are well interpreted and bring dimension to the main voice which is highly perch and shrill but never unpleasant.

Honour is Our Code, Death is the Reward Anthem is a great Scandinavian gods story and although it took five years to hear it, the wait was worth it because here, we are treated to what can be done best in Viking Metal. It is a masterful work that any fan of this style must procure right away .

My rating 9/10

Uriel – Remains of Innocence (2016)

Le groupe :
Philippe - Basse
Gaia - Voix
Dave ''Davazel'' Hazel - Guitare
Jessica - Violoncelle
Jon - Violon
Philip Trudel – Batterie

01 – Agonists Gives Again
02 – Wage of Reason
03 – Falling Angel
04 – Dwelling Perversity
05 – Black & White
06 – Abstract Me
07 – Architect of Denial
08 – Born from Regrets
09 – Remains of Innocence
10 – Dies Irae
11 – Walking Away

Uriel - Remains of Innocence (2016)

The band :
Philippe - Bass
Gaia - Voice
Dave '' Davazel '' Hazel - Guitar
Jessica - Cello
Jon - Violin
Philip Trudel - Drums
** Please note that on this album, it's the ex member of Uriel Frédéric Rousseau who have recorded all guitars parts.

Songs :
01 - Agonists Gives Again
02 - Wage of Reason
03 - Falling Angel
04 - Dwelling Perversity
05 - Black & White
06 - Abstract Me
07 - Architect of Denial
08 - Born from Regrets
09 - Remains of Innocence
10 - Dies Irae
11 - Walking Away

Uriel began its musical life in 2008 but took a while before emerging on stage. The band officiates in a Melodic Death Metal but in a completely different way from its mate of the same type by incorporating several classical elements such as the violin, the cello, the harpsichord but also through a voice eyeing more on the operatic side. The group didn’t have it easy, on a personal level, because over the years many musicians have passed through, which somewhat slowed its musical progression. The album, From Ashes to Phoenix, has shown the talent of composition but also a high musical level. Now, the band comes up with their new album Remains of Innocence, but let’s stop stalling and let’s sees what is in this new album.

It starts very slowly with the song Agonists Gives Away. An atmosphere filled with sweetness and tenderness that leaves no presage that we are listening to a metal band, but soon we return to earth with the song Wage of Reason which has a much faster rhythm and still retains a certain classical aspect with the cello.  The soft voice mixed with the growl gives aggressiveness and a nice atmosphere to the set.  Falling Angel takes us closer to a traditional heavy metal song because of the guitar, but we stay in a very good Melodic Death Metal. The growl always mixes well with the sweet and powerful voice of the singer. An excellent piece that deserves special attention through different moods and subtleties that emerges. Dwelling Perversity quickly returns to the origin of the band. It is powerful, fast and eyeing more on the melodic death metal, but with a touch of burlesque with its violin and bass sound effects where you can almost let yourself go to a bodily dance from left to right.  Throughout the song, the bass is truly present and plays a major role in the atmosphere that emerges. Black & White begins with the piano, but be careful because the speed is still waiting for you here. In this piece, we are still entitled to several mixtures of classical, brutality and gentleness. The drum is super strong and very effective, without further move the female voice that brings certain sensuality and the growl softness to the piece.  Abstract Me continues in the same vein, that is to say, a good vocal blend, fast and direct with rhythmical piano in the background.  One can perceive here and there the cello which also brings a color that is not unpleasant.  Architects of Denial is a more folk and more festive song. The music is still as heavy and powerful, but with the atmosphere coming from the sound of the harpsichord or the general mood of all instruments, the song is totally different from all that we have heard up now to the album. Born from Regrets becomes quickly darker and faster.  One can still hear several sound effects from the cello that are not at all unpleasant. It is another beautiful piece that blends gentle rhythmic and unbridled rhythmic. Remains of Innocence is the centerpiece album title and represents well all we could hear on the album until now, except that in the latter, the female vocals are more operatic. I believe that in this song, all the sound elements that make the sound of Uriel are involved. Yet another song very well thought out but and mostly well executed. Dies Irae started with violin, cello and a choir for vocals.  It has a truly classical atmosphere. Yes, we always have a super heavy song with the guitar and the growl, but the general atmosphere that emerges is more melodious. Walking Away is the last song of the album and starts with a really sweet and powerful voice. It is a good piece that allows a perfect album ending.

It is not easy to criticize an album in the case of Uriel. Not because it is bad, on the contrary. It is rather because the band blends many musical aspects and includes many instruments. We can hear piano, violin, cello and instruments usually found in metal; guitars, bass and drums as well as some other atmospheres here and there. The level of composition is well thought out, but extremely complicated to play. The songs are short, like from 2 to 3 minutes (if we exclude Falling Angel with 5: 40), but they are extremely loaded and full of subtlety. The band worked hard to reach an album of such quality and with the level of complexity that each song has, I say “well done”.  It has powerful and effective guitar, often rapid and solid drums, bass that exudes a pleasurable atmosphere, in short everything is there for a quality album. It took a long time for this new album to come out, but the wait was worth it.

My rating 8/10

Necronimicon (not to be confused with the German Trash Metal band of the same name) is from the Greater Montreal region. With four albums including the excellent Rise of the Elder Ones, the band is back today with a new mischief entitled Advent of the Human God. The band officiates in a dark and powerful Black Metal with some influences of Death Metal hidden here and there in their music.  Over the years, the group (despite a discography absence of 7 years) brought us strong songs and a clear evolution to reach the masterpiece that is Rise of the Elder Ones and naturally I wonder if it can do even better with his new album. So let’s not waste time and go see piece by piece what Advent of the Human God really is.

It begins with the very orchestral song The Descent.  It has a very classic intro or a perfect frame for a thriller movie. Comes next, the title track of the album which is Advent of the Human God. It is a festival of blast beats, some guaranteed speed, an extremely dark song with superb orchestration that takes an evil and powerful atmosphere. Easily we feel the darkness and we get carried away in this pure black terror movement. The Golden Gods begins with a sort of drum solo with a very frantic rhythm. The guitar playing is sublime, fast as the battery. An ultra powerful voice accompanies that. Despite being the feast of dark and powerful Black Metal, it doesn’t prevent some melodies from the guitar to bring a sublime touch. Okkultis Trinity is another introduction about two minutes thirty who still takes us into a cinematic movement with beautiful orchestrations and leads us gently to the song Unification of the Four Pillars which is more Death Metal in a way. The song is still ultra fast mainly due to well executed blast beat. There are always some hidden atmospheres here and there that bring a nice flavor to my ears and carry me, without me knowing, within the song. Crown of Thorns has a beginning that reminds us of Middle Eastern music and it will be felt many times during the song. Here we have a slower rhythm from the battery, I dare even say that it’s eyeing between Death Metal and Trash Metal. The piece never loses its rhythm and it is powerful and extremely heavy. The Fjord begins with a Spanish style guitar, slow and dark. You close your eyes and let yourself be cradled easily. Even Rob voice (guitar - vocals) goes down a tone, but keeps everything extremely dark and powerful. Gaia is another introduction track which could easily be added to any horror or science fiction movie. It is both psychedelic and mesmerizing. Bringer of Light starts with a great rhythm from the guitar. A still very quick piece with blast beats. Everything is there for a powerful and festive song. There are certainly slower moments that make me even think of Black Sabbath, but in a Black Metal version. It is superb. Innocence and Wrath, which is a Celtic Frost cover, is a dark piece that is slow, short but bloody well executed.  Alchemy of the Avatar returns immediately with furious and powerful rhythms. A beautiful song to end this metal album.

I did not believe that after an album like Rise of the Elder Ones, the band could still do much more, but I was wrong about Necronomicon. There are no dead times on this album and from start to finish, we are carried to a powerful and dynamic musical darkness. It has really well-crafted introductions, a trio that perfectly master their instruments, some ultra heavy guitar riffs and powerful and fast blast beat. In short, the album is some Black Metal everybody would always want. In addition, the cover of the album is beautiful. Everything is there for a perfect album.
