Concert review: Amon Amarth + guest (april 29th 2016 in Montréal)

(english will follow)

La foule chantait les refrains avec le groupe entre autre sur les chansons, First Kill, As Loke Falls, The way of Vkings, At Dawn’s First Light et Deceiver of Gods. Elle s’est donnée à fond sur les chansons Death in Fire, Runes to My Memory, Father of the Wolf, War of the Gods et Victorious March.

Amon Amarth with Entombed AD and Exmortus
April 29, Métropolis

When Amon Amarth comes to Quebec, virtually all metalheads from the province shows up. After a sold out house in Quebec City yesterday, The Metropolis was almost full Friday, April 29. You could feel the frenzy and excitement in the crowd. Already at 7 pm, the mezzanine was full and the stall was filled with glad and euphoric metalheads.

The Californian band, Exmortus began the evening. For me it was a discovery and I was dazzled. This Thrash Metal band with trends of Technical Death has been very well received by the crowd. The guitar lovers have got value for money as the two guitarists are exceptional. When the musicians have started a beautiful version of Moonlight Sonata, act 3, we were able to hear the musician’s talent at their best. It was very impressive. Besides being really good, the Exmortus musicians are super friendly and all of them display a wide smile while playing. We can say that the band has successfully started the evening.

Entombed AD arrived on stage in a very dynamic way. The band put its audience into the atmosphere of old Swedish Death. This Swedish band is a pioneer of Swedish Death Metal style and fans were quite pleased to see them. The musicians are also very smily and seem to have fun on stage. The Amon Amarth guitarist, Johan Söderberg, came to play two pieces with the band which led a grander touch to the music. Entombed AD played several of his old classic and newer songs. Everything was pleasant to hear.

The crowd was already ecstatic when the curtain opened to show a scene with a huge Viking helmet on which the drummer holds his war weapon. Stairs lead on each side to enable musicians to access the platform behind the drums. Amon Amarth began his show with the song Pursuit of Vikings. It only took a few notes for the mosh pit to activate itself and remain active until the last song.  19 songs!  We had 19 songs, almost 2 hours of show. It's incredible. And it has happened so fast. There hasn’t been any dull moment. Johan Hegg often addressed the crowd in French, he is super friendly and his passion is contagious. He exudes a humble smile and despite his stature, he is peaceful on stage. He knows how to make the crowd react and he’s very close to his fans, often looking at one of them in the eye and holding horns in the direction of another. The technical team brought a birthday cake in honor of Johan birthday, which was the day before and he proudly launched it at the fans in the mosh pit. It was one of many highlights of the evening. The two guitarists and bassist regularly engage in windmill in the company of Johan on the frantic rhythms of the new drummer. The crowd sang the chorus with the band on songs like First Kill, As Loke Falls, The way of Vkings, At Dawn's First Light of Gods and Deceiver. Warriors came interpret fighting with swords and shields to decorate the show on the song Thousand Years of Oppression among others.

Another highlight of the show is probably when Johan draped himself with the Quebec flag on his shoulder after telling the crowd that the band was doing a show in Toronto the next day. It was all it took to increase the frenzy at its height in the crowd.  It went totally wild on the songs Death in Fire, Runes to My Memory, Father of the Wolf, War of the Gods and Victorious March. As an encore, after the birthday cake episode, Amon Amarth played Raise your Horns. The party went on with Guardians of Asgaard with LG Petrov of Entombed AD.  I thought the evening to be finished, when to my surprise; Twilight of the Thunder God came ringing the real final of the evening. I was so glad the band ended with this song that is definitely one of my favorites.  It goes without saying that it was a great night, one of the best shows I have attended this year. The three bands present all gave a superb performance, the overall atmosphere was really great.  Apart from the two girls in front of me who really spoke too much (I don’t understand people who go see a show and talk about their life instead of listening to the show), the evening was perfect.
