Amon Amarth au Métropolis

Amon Amarth était de retour pour sa tournée
annuelle de bière et de musique et cette fois-ci ils avaient apporté le groupe
de power/heavy métal suédois Sabaton et nos voisins du Sud Skeletonwitch avec
eux. Je qualifie la tournée d’annuelle parce que, avouons le, ils passent par
Montréal habituellement une fois par année, habituellement en automne,
habituellement au Métropolis ou au Club Soda et vous savez quoi ? Continuez
comme cela parce qu’on adore !

Skeletonwitch a donné le coup d’envoi avec un
heavy métal solide. Les lignes de guitares
étaient tellement cool qu’on ne pouvait s’empêcher de balancer de la
tête en suivant le rythme. Leur musique
était rapide. Très rapide. La vitesse aurait pu tomber dans l’excès, si ce
n’avait été de la forte présence mélodique coulant au-dessus du tout. Le rendu
était d’une grande élaboration remplie de tensions et d’harmonies musicales
formant un tout impressionnant, amené par un sens du spectacle propre à la
formation. Je présume un léger problème
technique au niveau du son, mais j’aurais aimé entendre un peu plus les voix.
Le talent vocal de Chance Garnette n’ayant d’égal que sa présence de scène, on
s’attend à ce que sa vois soit mise en évidence. Toujours est-il que la
performance en général a été extrêmement bien exécutée, supportée par Dustin
Boltjes qui n’a jamais raté un temps de tout le concert. J’espère les revoir
bientôt, un peu plus haut dans la liste des groupes peut-être ?

Les dernières notes de Within my Blood se sont
effacées et le tour de Sabaton est arrivé en un éclair. Au premier coup d’œil,
j’ai été tentée de rouler les yeux et crier au quétaine. Je le dirai toujours,
je ne suis pas fan des lunettes de soleil sur scène et la tournure pantalon
camo et « veste pare-balle »
agencée avec du power métal me font sérieusement sourciller. J’ai tout de même décidé de garder l’esprit
ouvert et de ne pas juger le livre par sa couverture. Il n’en a pas fallu
beaucoup pour me rendre compte que ce livre-là est pesant. Il sonne comme une
tonne de briques, en fait. Si l’esthétique du groupe ne m’a pas convaincue, sa
musique a été reçue de façon positive tant par moi que par le reste de
l’audience, semblait-il. Les fans les
ont acclamés pendant des dizaines de minutes entre chaque chanson, tant et si
bien que Joakim a dû leur demander de se taire un peu pour ne pas causer trop
de retard dans le concert. Leur genre musical a toujours été bien reçu dans la
Belle Province, peut-être à cause de sa
proximité avec nos rythmes traditionnels, mais je crois qu’il s’agissait d’une
première. Le sens de l’humour du groupe s’est avéré un point gagnant. Ils
faisaient les fous et lançaient des blagues sans arrêt. Joakim se commandait
des bières sur scène, éructait habilement dans le micro…ils ont même lancé à la
blague que « non, ils ne sont pas un groupe hommage à Village
People ». Dans tous les cas, ils
ont reçu le mémo sur la façon dont nous faisons la fête par ici !

À bien y penser, Sabaton doit avoir reçu le
mémo d’Amon Amarth eux-mêmes. Ils sont passés par ce petit coin de planète plus
souvent que tout autre groupe international que j’ai pu voir en concert. Rendu
à ce point, Johan doit connaître par cœur le nom de chacun de ses fans à
Montréal. Amon Amarth est devenu au fil du temps une tradition annuelle de
notre communauté métal locale, un peu comme Noël et la St-Patrick, mais avec
moins de dinde que la première et plus de bière que la deuxième.
Souvent qualifiée de Viking Métal, leur
musique a été déclarée death métal à thématique viking par le groupe lui-même.
Peu importe le nom que l’on veut bien lui attribuer, il n’en reste pas moins
qu’elle donne franchement l’envie d’empoigner une épée et de s’embarquer sur
bateau pour conquérir des trucs. Toutefois, la seule option viking à notre
disposition pour la soirée c’était de boire de la bière et de chanter à
l’unisson, ce que personne ne s’est fait prier de faire. Amon Amarth a ouvert
les hostilités avec Deceiver of the Gods et une mise en scène tout en lumières
suivie de classiques triés de l’ensemble de leur discographie tels que Free
Will Sacrifice, Fate of Norns, Guardians of Aasgard et War of the Gods avant de
conclure avec un rappel. Ils ont terminé la soirée avec Twilight of the Thunder
God, Pursit of Vikings et un toast à la bande de pas fiables venus de partout
dans la région pour faire la fête avec eux.

Amon
Amarth was back for its annual beer and music round with us crazy headbangers
and this time they brought Swedish power/heavy metal band Sabaton and our
neighbors from the South Skeletonwitch along with them. I say “annual” because,
let’s face it, they come back about once a year, usually in Fall, usually at
Club Soda or Metropolis and you know what? Keep them shows coming guys because
we love it!

Skeletonwitch
kicked off the evening with a solid heavy metal set. Their guitar playing was
just so cool to listen to, there was nothing else to do but bang you head and
try to follow the beat. Their music was fast. Very fast. All that speed could
have been too much if it weren’t for the melodic lines racing on top of it all.
What we were left with was a great musical structure, tensions and harmonies
working together to become this beast of a show that Skeletonwitch had put
together. I am guessing this was a minor technical malfunction, but I would
have liked to hear the vocals a touch more. The vocal talent of Chance Garnette
being only matched by his intense energy on stage, it’s no surprise we would be
expecting his voice to be more at the front. Still, the general performance was
very well executed, supported by Dustin Boltjes on the drum kit, who never
missed a beat. I am hoping to see them again soon, maybe a little higher in the
show list next time?

The
last few notes of Within My Blood faded and Sabaton’s turn came in a flash. A
first glance, I was tempted to roll my eyes and yell “cheese”. Not a big fan of
the sunglasses and camo twist on their power metal, but let’s not judge the
book by its cover. Didn’t take long for me to figure out that was one heavy
book too! More like a ton of bricks, really. If the aesthetics of the group
didn’t appeal to me, its music certainly did and the rest of the crowd felt
very much in my corner. Fans liked them so much they cheered for 5-10 minutes
in between songs, so much so that Joakim had to ask everybody to shut it a
little to keep the show on schedule. The genre has always been well received in
the Belle Province, maybe because of its proximity to our own traditional music
and its rhythms, but this was a first I believe. The band’s humor was
definitely a plus. They goofed around making jokes, Joakim was drinking (and
burping) beer on stage...they even took the time to reassure us that they
weren’t a Village People cover band. They definitely got the memo on how it’s
done around here!

They
may have gotten the memo from Amon Amarth themselves, now that I think of it.
They’ve been in this corner of the planet more times than any other international
bands I can think of. Johan must know the name of every single fan by now. Amon
Amarth has been a yearly tradition in our local metal culture for a long time,
almost like Christmas and St-Paddy’s but with less turkey than the first and
more beer than the latter.
Often
referred to as viking metal, self proclaimed viking-themed death metal, they
sure make us feel like grabbing a sword and getting on a boat to conquer things
and places, but since the only viking option of the evening was drinking beer
and singing along, we all wholeheartedly did so. They opened their set with
Deceiver of the Gods, followed by classics and recent songs alike such as Free
Will Sacrifice, Fate of Norns, Guardians of Aasgard and War of the Gods, before
closing the evening with Twilight of the Thunder God, The Pursuit of Vikings
and a toast to their unsavory company of the evening...That would be us,
indeed!
