The Fall of Me a su me surprendre grâce à l’ajout du banjo en toile de fond. Let it Die reviens plus heavy.

Dead Quiet is a band that emerged in 2014 and who is from Western Canada, specifically from Vancouver. Despite the fact that the group is very young and has already arrived with a first album, its members are not at their first experience on the metal scene. Who remembers Barn Burner - 3 Inches of Blood or Ancilients to name a few? Well, here we have a completely different register; Stoner Metal, Doom Metal, and even, Groove Metal.   Let’s see, piece by piece the content of the first Dead Quiet album.

The Sorceress is the first song; a slow starts, but will quickly become dynamic, whether imposed by the rhythm guitars or by the drums. The all incorporated by a sublime voice.  A good start, suggesting good stuff to come.  Foul Words has a clearly more Doom Metal side, much slower, but without losing that little dynamic side you could hear in the first song. The latter has a groove that captivates you and forces your body in motion instantly. As for percussion, it is just great and powerful. God Was Wrong starts way more atmospheric and thanks to the acoustic guitar, it shows us another facet. Indeed, here we have the right for a mixture of dark and very heavy melting extremely well together with some melodic and acoustics appearance. A strong piece worked well but also pleasant to listen to. My Finest Hour is, I think, more psychedelic Rock due to the atmosphere that exudes from it.  Everything stays still pretty electric and the guitar is significantly present and forays small solo here and there. Remaining Remains automatically follows with melodic guitars, but beware because the dynamics will be much darker here. Even on the side of the voice, one can easily feel this darkness. Home Is Where You Go to Die is eyeing more on the side of a ballad; a much more Stoner Rock song, even if after 2 minutes, everything becomes heavier. It nonetheless remains very melodic and you will be able to feel, on some occasions, some Black Sabbath effect.  The Fall of Me has managed to surprise me with the addition of the banjo in the background. It's a piece that's still melodic enough and hyper atmospheric.  You feel on the latter, a spirit that truly comes from the 70s.  Despite its slowness, it’s a song full of surprises, but mostly full of talent from the group members. Playing this style, with so many various atmospheres each one different from the other is a challenge. Let it Die is heavier. In my listening, I could feel some Alice in Chains, but in a more Stoner Metal style.  The dynamic and groove released from it forces the body in movement instantly. The bass and drums combined are simply sublime and bring to the song this little groove so nice to listen to.  A Thousand Lives was the last song of the album and it’s slightly out of register, going more towards what The Doors could do at the time. Nonetheless there is still a heavy and hyper vitamins side to it. A great solo decorates the whole.

For a first album, Dead Quiet as managed its mission; A good blend of style, both Heavy and Groovy Stoner, also flirting with Doom and incorporating external styles that gives some flavor to all the songs. A certain energy that could bring us back in the 70s, while remaining very modern in its production.  Quality musicians with lots of luggage behind them.  A really powerful and just as effective rhythm section.  Sublime guitars that bring a certain atmosphere either by solos or in rhythm. In terms of voice, Kevin Keegan is just great because it can take us where he wants through the emotions released by the song. For a first album, mission accomplished.

My rating: 8/10

Kataklysm - Of Ghosts and Gods (2015)

Le groupe:
Maurizio Iacono - Voix
Jean-Francois Dagenais - Guitare
Stéphane Barbe - Basse
Oli Beaudoin - Batterie

Les chansons:
01 - Breaching the Asylum

02 - The Black Sheep

03 - Marching Through Graveyards

04 - Thy Serpent’s Tongue

05 - Vindication

06 - Soul Destroyer

07 - Carrying Crosses

08 - Shattered

09 - Hate Spirits

10 - The World is a Dying Insect

The World is a Dying Insect est la dernière pièce de l’album.

Kataklysm, with Voivod, who is probably the most representative group from Quebec in the world metal scene, comes to us today with a new album entitled Of Ghosts and Gods. With strong albums such as Prevail and Heaven's Venom and with a very impressive discography that can’t be ignored, the group even had the audacity to surprise us with an unusual concept in the Death Metal world, or even in metal world in general; that is to say to release a music video for each song on the album which is a total of ten video clips in all.  We did not have to wait too long for another Kataklysm album, because the last album, Waiting for the End to Come appeared in 2013. This album, which I think, was not up to the predecessors, made my expectations really high for Of Ghosts and Gods. Let's see precisely what is in this new opus.

It begins with the song Breaching the Asylum. The spoken intro brings in background the music and from the start you can immediately feel the power that emerges there. Pure Kataklysm Death Metal, both slow sometimes and with powerful and direct blast beat by other times. The voice seems dark and interweaves well into the song. The Black Sheep is direct and listening to it, made me turn my head and headbang. The latter still has some melodic aspect which gives a nice flavor to the song. On stage, The Black Sheep will wreak havoc with fans, guaranteed. After a dark introduction Marching Through Graveyards, starts powerfully and without compromise. The guitar is very effective in its rhythm and as always, the battery is super fast. Pure Death Metal, again, ravaging everything in its path. The Serpent's Tongue reminds me initially of Sepultura due to the sound, but then quickly returns to what Kataklysm is know for and to his own identity; a rhythmic powerful Death Metal with Thrash components eyeing the side at times. Vindication brings us the blast beats from hell which is a Kataklysm characteristic. A dark side emerges from the guitar and bass, never losing a single second of power in its rhythm. Soul Destroyer reminds me of the period of Prevail with his pace but also thanks to the dynamics imposed by the voice. It makes me headbang on the spot and again, by dint of repetition, it will wreak havoc with fans in live situation. Carrying Crosses also has an infernal rhythm, slower and melodic. But beware; here we are talking about rhythm, because the song still remains extremely dark and effective. Shattered has several changes of rhythm, but remains strongly hard and heavy. Hate Spirit comes with a really fast and destructive rhythm. This is guaranteed headbanging to some point and the voice transports us into a dark world.  Here everything is there; even the bass is going wild, to the greater pleasures of my ears. The World is a Dying Insect is the final piece of the album. It has a much more atmospheric beginning that will take us to a slower world but equally effective. On the latter, we have the right to everything; melody, power, frenzied rhythm. A real treat.

With Of Ghosts and Gods, Kataklysm shows us that the band still has a lot in his luggage and continues to evolve in the World Death Metal scene. The guitar play of Jean-Francois Dagenais is simply masterful and powerful. On the side of the voice, Maurizio Iacono is up to the expectations. His powerful voice manages to take us into another world.  The drum play is super powerful and fast and the bass parts you can feel heavily here and there. Ten quality songs, some of which are tailored to the scene and like a tsunami will destroy everything in their path. An album you have to quickly get and that is strongly recommended by Québec-Métal.
