08 - Reanimate
09 - Toxidorphins
10 - Fallen Fairy
11 - This Mortal Blessing

Outlying is a band from the Mauricie region, specifically Trois-Rivières and who officiates in a melodic Death Metal style. Since its inception in 2008, the band released an E.P. called Within the Jail of the Unfortunate (2008), but especially the excellent album Scars of a Daylight which appeared in 2011. Despitethe fact the band has only one real album, thanks to the latter it has made its mark with pieces like the Slepwalker - Corruptive Agent. As a trio, the band combines well melody and brutality and has shown us its ability for composition, but also the obviously talent of the musicians. Today, the band is finally back with a new offshoot that is Frameworks For Repression. So let’s not waste time and see if the long wait has been worth it.

The song Bloodflower has the honor of opening the ball, a slow start where the bass is emphasized and has a slow rhythmic but slightly thrashy and suddenly the frantic riff begins. It becomes an ultra fast piece with some changes of more slow rhythms at times. It is a good song to open the whole thing. The piece Futile is superbly composed with that little touch of Thrash while remaining in the melodic Death Metal style. The vocal reminds me a bit of Children of Bodom. In some places, one can hear some more progressive elements while still remaining very fast and rhythmic. Paint You Dead does not leave us without reaction. On the contrary, from the beginning, we start headbanging, but it only lasts for a while and the more technical and progressive side takes over. It is a more atmospheric song trend in its overall atmosphere but it is a wonderful experience.  Land of the Estranged goes strong with blast beats from the start, but without much altering the melodic side operated by the band.  Just after the beginning of the song, a hyper progressive interlude stats and then, we are taken on a wildly flying. Alicia's Tales is an atmospheric song by its departure and much more melodic. It is almost a ballad. We can now hear the clearest voice in a less Death style, but still effective. It is the best song to discover the extent of the talent of composition but also the mastery of their instruments.  Of course at times the Death style does not disappear, but a good listening will make a better idea. Crumbled Dawn begins with a slightly muted guitar, and a dynamic and progressive rhythmic. The battery on the latter takes a little more space and the bass is omnipresent. Much energy is released within this song and the band dares to get out of their comfort zone which is Death Metal to amalgamate certain other items in the song.  A Breach in the Frameworks has a more acoustic and slightly confusing start. It's like a kind of interlude to get to the piece Reanimate that it brings us back down to earth with its much more obvious Death Metal.  It is a direct and fast song including a more highly pitched voice. I dare even say a good blend of Children of Bodom and Cradle of Filth, just to give you an idea of the borrowed style here. Toxidorphins remains a slow piece in its atmosphere without, nevertheless, losing strength and heavyness. There are even some Type O Negative items within the song.  It is complex, but tasty to listen to. Fallen Fairy reminds me a bit of the first album with its atmosphere.  It is a quick song with break downs here and there. It has a good mix of vocal and backing vocals, a perfect heavy guitar, that can easily change very quickly to a fast and fucking well done melody. This Mortal Blessing closes the album and it is even the longest piece with 8:31 on the clock. It has an extremely slow start where the guitar highlights its most melodic aspects that the band have done so far. The dark side of the ensemble is very well done. Despite its length, there is no downtime. Within the song, we find a slow or fast but pleasant rhythm. A great way to end the album.

With this new album from Outlying, it is important not to expect another album like Scars of a Daylight. Rather, here, we feel that the band has mounted in maturity. The penultimate last album was great, but with Frameworks For Repression, members have gone even higher and have managed their challenge to lay us a complex album, but without risking the quality. For here, when I speak of a quality album to say the least. The band was able to get out of its comfort zone and explore various foreign elements in Death Metal, but good to one another. The only complaint I will make to the band, but at the same time is not one due the composition level of this album; this is not to wait several years to lay us another album. The easiest way will be for you to listen to this album and enjoy it from beginning to end and you will understand my statements.

My rating: 8.5 / 10

Festival Review: Amnesia Rockfest - Montebello (june 25th 2016 - Part.2)

(english will follow)

Amnesia Rockfest – Montebello (23 au 25 juin 2016)

Samedi 25 juin

Le tout débute par Caught in a Mosh, suivra Got the TimeAntisocial -Fight 'Em 'Til You Can'tIndians.

Nous avons manquez les prestations de BARF, Miss May I, D.R.I. et Bring me the Horizon.

Amnesia Rockfest - Montebello (23 to 25 June 2016)

Saturday, June 25

After having a great evening on Thursday based on the theme of Quebec, Friday had groups of choice with some performances that will be remembered for long.  On Saturday, the festival gave more with cult bands of the global metal scene. It promises to be a hot day with 32 degree Celsius, but no matter the temperature, nothing can stop the festival goers to celebrate and headbang at will.  During the course of the day, security officials will use garden hoses to cool the thousands of metalheads.

The day begins with the Gatineau band Insurrection with its melodic Death Metal. Despite the hour, the band came on stage with a non-standard power. After a sound introduction, the band starts big with the Checkmate song and does not stop surging rough and powerful songs throughout its playing time. The singer jokes around with the hundreds of fans already raised before the barricades to receive the band with energy. The group even paid the luxury to offer its fans a new composition and talking to the singer myself after the show, I learned that already seven songs are ready. So we must prepare for a fourth album soon. The band may even make a song sung entirely in French. The singer pays himself a small walkabout and for the performance, are launched a helmet and a football ball (American) and triggers a friendly Wall of death. It all ends with the title track from their latest album, that is to say Prototype. As always Insurrection has given us a concert worthy of its reputation.

Unearth embarks on the Jagemeister scene, and the members are also prepared to destroy everything. The crowd has enlarged and the band picks in all their discographies. The Boston band (U.S.A.) seems happy to be there and we feel this contagious energy. The voice of Trevor Phipps is at its best while the pair of guitarist offers us powerful riffs. Another strong show was offered to us that make us realize that this day will not be calm despite the intense heat.

As the colors of the decor shows us, The Black Dahlia Murder came to defend his latest album title that is Abysmal. That's what we was thinking about the banner, but finaly the band have played their whole first album. An uncompromising Death metal offered with boundless energy. It seems that the intense heat unleashed all the musicians that went on stage until now. Songs like Contagion or Funeral Thirst cannot do anything else then making the crowd move.  We even start seeing, after only three bands, clouds of dust in the air because of the fans turning into the pit due to dry land. This was some The Black Dahlia Murder as we like it.

Now is the Finnish from Korpiklaani turn to storm the Jagermeister stage and present their festive Folk Metal.  From the start we quickly understand that this will be a party. A band all in smile, except for the bassist who is more serious, but we do not care because he reminds us of The Lord of the Rings dwarves. Jonne (vocals) really takes possession of the stage, smiling all throughout the show and even gives us a few words in French. Whether the song Journey Man, Rauta or Vodka, throughout this concert was a celebration and the crowd was jumping and clapping continuously.

Now we head to the Budweiser stage, main stage where Sepultura begins its performance with Troops of Doom.  Naturally many fans will have fun trying to compare the performance of the band with the one from the Cavalera brothers the day before which incorporated Roots album in full, but here it is Sepultura and despite a slight problem on the side of the drums (a bass drum was moving and had to be restrained by a technician) we got some true Sepultura, that is to say, classics such Arise - Territory - Refuse / Resist. I must admit that for me the songs Ratamahatta and Roots were best interpreted by Sepultura because it also incorporated real traditional Brazilian drum on stage. Derrick Green is really energetic and has a really powerful voice and Paulo Jr. is always smiling.  Andreas Kisser has addressed the crowd announcing a new album for October that we await impatiently of course.

Now let’s go on the Quebec scene where Anonymus, who is nicknamed the Quebecers Megadeth, offer a powerful Thrash Metal sang in French.  As expected, we were treated to great songs from the latest album Envers et Contre Tous and with some pieces from their repertoire. It was a really powerful tearing Thrash, a Carlos Araya on drums so solid as always, an ultra square guitar duo in their games and what about the voice of Oscar Souto, simply sublime. Again Anonymus has demonstrated its seriousness but also his immense talent and although it played on a smaller stage, the crowd was there and had greatly appreciated this high quality concert from them.

Let me take you back on the main stage where Anthrax offers its Thrash Metal which, I'm sure, everyone already knows. Of course I like the old songs, but I'm a little disappointed in the list of songs that the band has chosen for this concert at Amnesia Rockfest. It begins by Caught in a Mosh, follow Got the Time - Antisocial -Fight 'Em Til You Can’t - Indians. Only two songs from the new album For All Kings will be played which are Evil Twins and Breathing Lightning. Let's say the band could easily select other titles, but like all cult bands of the 80s, many are caught doing their classics not to displease their fans. Fortunately, the boundless energy of Joey Belladonna was there because I found the members a little static because they didn’t move too much except on the song Indians.

A long-awaited moment on the Jagermeister stage was the show from the band Sodom. The last visit in Quebec of this cult German Thrash Metal band dated from 2006. It is Tom Angelripper on vocal with his gravely looks who declares war with songs such as: In War in Peace - Sodomy & Lust - M -16 - Agent Orange - Blasphemer and many others. The crowd was conquered in advance and really appreciate what the trio offers us musically. The group will complete its performance with none other than Ausgebombt. In total thirteen quality songs, a band happy to be there and we could feel it.

Lamb of God is not at his first at Rockfest, its last visit was in 2013. The band begins his performance with Walk with me in Hell which quickly turns into a nightmare for the band, because the sound return on the scene didn’t work and the members couldn’t ear themselves. As great professionals, the members finished the song anyway and we will have to wait ten minutes for the problem to be solved. During this forced break, Randy Blythe took the opportunity to animate the crowd laughing with it. The sound finally fixed, the band restarts with Ruin and then one begins to feel that this will really be a great concert. The song 512 taken from VII: Sturm und Drang album is then performed and is really powerful and heavy, a pure delight. Many people spoke of Chris Alder and his work on the Megadeth album, Dystopia, but I have to say that his place is really in Lamb of God with his powerful play on drums. It is only my personal impression. After playing songs: Engage the Fear Machine - Now You've Got Something to Die For -The Faded Line - Blacken the Cursed Sun - Laid to Rest, the band ends its performance in great force with the song Redneck, causing on both sides of the crowd, one of the biggest moshpit that I was given to see in my career. It was such a big mass movement that two large dust clouds hovered above the crowd. It was a masterful performance from Lamb of God.

Again Quebec Metal ends his day on the Quebec scene with none other than the pioneer of what Quebec metal which is Voivod. With songs like Astronomy Domine - Kluskap O 'Kom - Psychic Vacuum - Voivod and many other of the band classics, it gave a worthy performance of their name. The band line-up is now stable; you can really feel the chemistry onstage. Also the band members are all smiling, have a lot of fun and the crowd returns it really well. It was a very nice way to end the festival with this quality band that offered a performance of the highest caliber.

I don’t know what hovered in the sky of Amnesia Rockfest, but almost all the bands that I have seen performed had a big smile and had a blast on stage. I have not seen this often in my career. Of course as said before, there were other bands in different metal styles that have performed but Quebec-Metal has not covered them, because with five scenes we had to make an agonizing choice to cover most bands as possible. We missed the show of BARF, Miss May I, D.R.I. and Bring me the Horizon.

Again Amnesia Rockfest was a huge success with close to one hundred thousand people who have assisted in this 11th edition. There were more food concessions and more variety as well and also as I said, festival goers had fun. There was a wide choice of music and especially on the metal side. Montebello Village, as always, was of the party and participated with joy to the music festival that is the Amnesia Rockfest. So we can easily say that this edition was a huge success and even though the festival just ended, we look forward to the 12th edition in 2017.

Festival Review: Amnesia Rockfest (june 23rd to 25th 2016 - Part 1)

(english will follow)

Amnesia Rockfest – Montebello (23 au 24 juin 2016)
Part.1

We're not Gonna Take It.

Amnesia Rockfest - Montebello (June 23 and 24 2016)
Part.1

This year brings the 11th edition of the prestigious Amnesia Rockfest and Quebec Metal was at its 5th coverage of the event that includes several styles like Hardcore, Alternative, Punk, Rock, but also Metal.  Again this year, a small village of 900 souls was transformed, so much that the population grew from 900 to 100 000 people for three days of festivities.

In this column we'll talk about the first two days. Like every year we have been blessed from the metal gods because we were treated to a temperature bordering 30 degrees each day. What could be better? But before talking about the festival metal aspect, one must mention the other groups of different style, just to show you the extent of this festival. Groups such as Blink 182 - Ice Cube - Rise Against - Limp Bizkit and more.

Now let's talk about serious things; Metal music.  Like every year, the Amnesia Rockfest we're accustomed to quality hitters, and this year was no exception with bands like Twisted Sister - Sodom - Cannibal Corpse - Sepultura - Anthrax - Lamb of God and many other groups like you will be able to read in the following lines.

It began on Thursday evening with the Quebec evening and as the name says, the evening included only Quebec bands. Since Quebec Metal covers only Metal, we will tell you about these shows.
Naturally, the evening was entitled to all the style but also to various tributes, but two bands took all Quebec Metal’s attention.  Spacemak3r which is a very heavy band also blends with a very theatrical, almost a circus side. Despite a 25-minute show, they put all of it; costumes, beautiful scenery despite the size of the Tony Sly 1 scene, a pretty girl who plays with fire, confetti and more. But especially powerful music with large shade that takes us directly into a circus but in metal way. This is a band that deserved to play on one of the three biggest festival stages.

Urban Aliens who is also from the Greater Montreal area and who officiates in a Death Porncore also came on the Tony Sly 1 scene and we were offered with a show based on their last E.P. called 7 Tounes d’Épais.  It was again a solid performance, thanks to fun lyrics, because for those who do not know already, Urban Aliens uses nasty sexual language, but always parodying it, hence the Porncore term.

Friday, June 24th

In this day of the national holiday of Quebec, what better way to start it off with a Quebecers band which is Mass Murder Messiah who officiates in a Groove and very rhythmic Heavy Metal style? Alex Leblanc (vocals) is very fit and is walking everywhere on stage. As for guitars, they have obvious power. Bizier (bass) is unleashed and Sammoth (drums) smashes its battery so loud, the sound was heavy. Already at that time of day, the crowd is already super excited. A concert worthy of what Mass Murder Messiah has accustomed us to see, that is to say without compromise and right into your ears.

The Faceless came on the Jagermeister stage and offers a mix of atmospheric and progressive Death Metal flavored with Core.  Although I do not know too much this band and I am not an ardent fan of this style, I have to admit that this band has an obvious musical ability and their songs are very appreciated by the public. My only negative point is that the band members don’ move much on stage, or even are static repeatedly unfortunately.

Max and Igor Cavalera arrived on the Jagermeister stage and believe me the crowd was eagerly waiting. Max Cavalera was all smiles on the stage. The band celebrates the 20th anniversary of Sepultura album Roots and has called Back to Roots their tour. Then we were treated to the full album and everything started with Roots Bloody Roots. Whether the musicians who accompany the band or both Cavalera brothers, we immediately see that they are happy to be at the Amnesia Rockfest and the crowd shows all their love chanting and singing each song played. Whether on songs like Attitude or Ratamahatta, everything is there and it was a performance worthy of this album.  At some point, you would have thought the possible surprise meeting on stage to be real because next day, Sepultura was already programmed in the festival program, which could have been a master event. But hey who knows, one day maybe.

Another band was highly anticipated on the Jagermeister stage and it is Cannibal Corpse. What more to say than this; destruction, never ending headbanging and brutality from their Death Metal. It begins with the song Eviceration and we will be entitled to a very impressive much as brutal set list with songs like: Scourge - Kill or Become - Make Them Suffer and more. The crowd was completely unleashed to the delight of George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, who had a big smile to see the crowd trash at will in the pit. A huge crowd had come for Cannibal Corpse which made a magical and powerful concert that has ended with the song Devoured.

It is now the turn of Cradle of Filth to enter on the Jagermeister stage, an empty stage sets, which the band has not accustomed us with. Usually the band indoors show is always provides with a decor and a truly impressive setting. But the band will instead rely on its music for this performance.  Playing songs from the more recent albums as well as the first albums with songs like Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids, what a delight. The crowd seems to appreciate, over and against at times, it felt that the shrill voice of Dany Filth was lost through all the instruments. Lindsay Schoolcraft was all in beauty and all smiles as for the guitarists. Overall it was a great concert despite the lack of decorations, but for a festival, the first importance, in itself, is music.

On the Quebec scene was a great show performed by Quebeckers band Ghoulunatics.  A super-powerful and dynamic groove this band plays. No flaws in their performance, everything was square and the band members are all smiling and proud to be there, giving to the crowd this boundless energy contagiously. It should be noted that the band members are not at their first musical experience as we feel their talents and control in each instrument. The band has four albums but close to twenty years of existence and they dug into all albums as a set list.  This is a band to discover urgently if you do not know them yet.

If there is a band that everyone was looking forward for this evening, it is Twisted Sister. Three quarters of the crowd moved for Dee Snider band (to the detriment of Gorguts playing at the same time on the Quebec stage). The band celebrates its forty years of existence and at the same time, their last concert in Canada and it was happening at Amnesia Rockfest. The band arrived on stage with the shouts of the raging crowd and starts with the song Stay Hungry. Throughout the performance we will be entitled to a multitude of success despite a simple forty-five minutes show.  Of course a song was dedicated to the late A.J. Pero (died 2015). His replacement is none other than Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater). The entire band was smiling and proud to be here and unadorned, just good rock 'n' roll. As usual, Dee Snider made his  little political discourse but necessary due to the content of terrorist acts around the world and after this speech the perfect song was We're not Gonna Take It.  The band will complete its performance with the song I Wanna Rock.  It was forty-five minutes of pure delight and of great joy to have been able to attend this event which is the last Canadian concert of Twisted Sister. But there is just one question on my mind, why the band didn't play on the main stage ?

Now we are headed to the Quebec scene where Despised Icon begins its concert. The band officiates in a mix of Groove, Core and Death Metal.  It was a hyper-energetic performance. Two singers provide voice and one of them at a time jumped down from the stage to sing with the crowd, almost on the edge of bodysurfing. With Despised Icon, it is almost impossible not to love their show and it was still the case this time. The whole in front of a crowd conquered in advance.

Eventually the evening ends on the Budweiser stage (main stage) with Korn performance. I must admit that the style borrowed by the group is really not my style, a style more towards Nu-Metal. After a slight delay of fifteen minutes, the band arrived on stage and I must admit I was surprised by it.  It is a really energetic band that had no problem to win the crowd and the set list was full of hits but also songs from their latest album. The voice of Jonathan Davis was at the height of what we are used on their albums. This was a nice way to end the first official day of Amnesia Rockfest.

Naturally Quebec Metal told you about the above mentioned band, but there were not the only one to perform in the world of metal at Amnesia Rockfest on the first day. We must not forget the return after twenty years on stage of the band Demence who offered a theatrical and gore performance.  Also the band Gorguts that, despite a low audience before them (due to the concert of Twisted Sister), remained professional and delivered a performance worthy of their hyper technical Death metal. A beautiful day it was, the crowd had lots of fun, so what more to ask from this first official day of Amnesia Rockfest?  Do not miss the chronicle of day two. It will have even bigger metal material.
