Concert Review: 4th Annuel Québec-Métal show (january 15th - 2016)

(english will follow)

Quebec –Metal Evening in collaboration with Jaune Prodz
HolloW, Decadawn, Ice Vinland and Potion 13
Friday, January 15, 2016 at Petit Campus

Quebec -Metal made its annual evening January 15, 2016 and it was a nice way to start 2016. The bands choice was such that all could find its happiness.  Indeed, each group was very different in style.  So it was a very varied and interesting evening. Potion 13 opened the evening.  The Montreal band knows how to set the mood in the place with its catchy and lively songs. The quartet has a Hard Rock Old School and Heavy Metal song repertoire. The songs are in French and the lyrics are meant involved.  Danielle, the singer, sings all her emotions with her powerful voice, while Naty, the bassist and Bryan, the guitarist assure the back vocals. As usual, the band is always fun to watch and listen to. The complicity between the musicians is evident and their performance is full of passion. It is with smiling faces that they deliver intoxicating compositions performed by the uplifting rhythms of drummer Simon Pierre and biting melodies of the guitar and bass.

Arrived on the scene, Ice Vinland (or should I say, arrived on the scene, Vikings.) This band of Quebec was doing his album launch and no need to tell you that this is Viking Power Metal. Epic compositions are provided by the clear voice of the singer with a well managed warrior costume endow with Thor hammer. He is accompanied by two guitarists and a bassist who give us great beautiful melodies. The drummer makes frantic rhythms worthy of Power Metal. All of that gives us the impression of being in the heart of a mythical battle. The singer interacts a lot with the crowd and even throws confetti coming out of the legendary Norse God weapon.

Decadawn, who was semi finalist in the Wacken battle 2015, continued the evening. The Death Metal band from Montreal as a Swedish Melodic Death Metal style that reminds me of Soilwork. Their compositions are beautiful and well interpreted. The singer, who also plays the guitar, has a great stage presence and all band musicians offer a good show. The guitar riffs and solos are performed beautifully, the drums rhythms provided by the new drummer invites us to head bang.  There were sometimes 3 guitars tonight.  3 guitars make a lot of melody. The music is effective, the musicians are good. One cannot ask for more. The band also presented songs that will be on their new album, on which it is currently working.

The band HolloW finished the evening. This band also from Montreal always offers us an interesting performance. Their stage makeup, which is the work of a body painting artist, is spectacular.  The four musicians are in the skin of their dark character throughout their show and plunge us into a gloomy world.  The band offer nice Symphonic Black Death Metal style compositions.  Cadaver guitar riffs are piercing and melancholic.  The work of the bassist, Snow, is stunning and brings much to the melody. The singer, Mott, takes its place as the God of darkness with his deep growl and Blaac, the drummer, plays his crazy rhythms perfectly. The band has also unveiled new songs that will be on an upcoming album on which it is working. The latter were very well received by the public. I look forward of the next album.

It was a very fun evening animated by Alain from Quebec-Metal and a lot of presence gifts were distributed to the public joy. If you weren’t there, you missed something.

Sound of Memories – To Deliverance (2015)

Le groupe:
Florent Orsini: Voix
Luis Tobar: Guitares
Alain Delseux: Guitares
Fabien Benetti: Basse
Nacim Galouz: Batterie

Les chansons :
01 – Non Compos Mentis (intro)
02 – Momentum
03 – Confined in Struggle
04 – Eulogy
05 – Amenaa
06 – Pray for Blood
07 – The Vulture’s Pride
08 – Beyond the Maze
09 – From Above
10 – To Deliverance

07 - The Vulture's Pride

10 - To Deliverance

Sound of Memories is a band from France which saw its first breath of life in 2010. The band was created at the time by the two guitarists and the bassist.  During these early years the group is joined by a drummer and also a singer. Unfortunately these first steps were not successful and the band returned to its original core trio. It was finally in 2012 that the band found its singer and drummer. The band released an EP in 2013 entitled Living Circle, which contains only three titles, but that will demonstrate the obvious talent of the group. It was finally in 2015 that the band will have their first full album To Deliverance. The band officiates in a melodic Death Metal style, but as you'll see in the critic, its many influences are obvious. Now let’s take the time, song by song, to dissect this album.

The album begins with the introduction Non Compos Mentis; a fairly standard introduction, including piano and violin and worthy of a movie soundtrack.  Follows the first real song, which is Momentum. From the first notes, we immediately understand that we have no right here to relaxation.  It’s a highly disjointed piece including a mix of several styles. The bass is very present, a good growl voice and a very effective rhythm. On the side of the guitars; it's solid and it's dark, combining fury and melody. Confined in Struggle is much stronger in its rhythmic and reminds me of Children of Bodom at some point, but remains in the style of Sound of Memories. It combines much melody from guitars, and is a mix between Groove and melodic Death Metal. A really solid piece with a highly well interpreted guitar solo. Eulogy also starts with a strongly sustained rhythm. The voice is still as gloomy, but thanks to guitars, it still keeps that little melodic side that gives a nice flavor to the mix. Grazing with Trash Metal at some places, it’s a pure delight to my ears.  All instruments are put to work and we can hear it. Amenaa begins with classical guitar and a sort of Blues rhythm, but let’s not get all soft because, here, we will don’t have the right to a ballad.  Instead, the song is strong and direct. Again, here, we have the right to a rhythmic close to Thrash mixed with Death Metal. In the three quarts of the song, the Blues rhythms comes back but it’s mixed with a strong and slow dark side. Pray for Blood brings us quickly to earth with a truly powerful and fast rhythm.  Excluding the growl in the song, I would say it's a really Trash style sound with a truly beautiful and extremely fast solo.  A piece that could destroy everything in its path on stage.  Headbanging guaranteed.  The Vulture's Pride is much slower and has a slight more technical Death content in general. Despite its Death Metal style, you can hear more rock parts here and there thanks to the guitars.  Beyond the Maze starts with a beautiful mad quick rhythm, making me think of the old Speed Metal, but with an ultra modern sound.  It still remains always in a Death Metal register here. I love the guitar play, but especially the high-pitched growl voice that is hyper atmospheric at times. From Above continuously amaze us with its mixtures of styles and influences, no weak points to note here. Instead, the song masterfully incorporates a set hard to describe but very tasty. To Deliverance is the title track of the album and also the one that closes the album. I can feel some more folk and festive influences in some places. I like the groove sound that the bass brings to the song.  Classical Guitar resurfaced in this last song and you can really feel all the emotion that emerges from the guitars. It’s a tailored piece to end a great album full of surprises and obvious talents.

For a first album, Sound of Memories gave all it had and do not hesitate to please us with its melodic Death Metal full of variety and very tasty influences. The guitars are both powerful and melodious and we see, here, that the pair of guitarists really has a huge talent. The bass is very present everywhere on the album which is rare nowadays. It provides a groove to all songs. The growl voice as dark as festive which you can hear clearer a few times, is not bad at all.  Even on the contrary, the atmosphere it creates is tailor-made for that style. Here, the band is not afraid to dare to integrate different influences to his Death Metal, which makes it unique and original in the composition. Ten strong and powerful songs including several of them that will certainly be a stage havoc.  As well as in Quebec, France is full of unknown talented band that deserves attention and Sound of Memories is actually one of them with this new album, To Deliverance. A well-built music, a really beautiful album art and talented musicians. What more ? Quebec Metal strongly recommends you to buy this album.
