Jungle Rot with Hidden Pride and Crosstitution
L’Alizé

The evening of July 16 was a brutal one, musically speaking.  With the legendary band, Jungle Rot, who was visiting from the United States, we could expect to get broken eardrums with well grinded decibels. Jungle Rot was accompanied by Hidden Pride and Crosstitution, two Montreal bands that make violent and energetic sounds.

Crosstitution took the stage and immediately we felt a strong current of energy filling the Alizé. The band offers a greasy Death Metal, Grindcore and knows how to blow you away. The singer, FKR, has a serial killer look who just made a killing before taking the stage with his blood-stained shirt. The other musicians support him well.  Everyone plays his role as deranged person who hates society. FKR never address sweet word to the public and he leaves the stage like a furious one. This quickly concluded their set that has well started the evening as necessary.  Crosstitution music has awakened everyone and the fans were very happy.

The band Hidden Pride followed, with their brutal Death Metal, Grindcore. The drummer, Julien Mercier, who played just before with Crosstitution was also playing with Hidden Pride. He showed absolute energy and talent as he did not lose the pace and made our rib cage shake. The talented musicians, who mostly also play for Point Blank Rage, with the exception of singer, Martin Mailloux, have delivered us strong fat notes as desired. I needed this violent music and I think I wasn’t the only one. The audience was on fire! Hidden Pride’s music can recall the good US technical Death Metal like Dying Fetus. The musicians are very talented and demonstrate expertise of their art but their music is just not technical, it is also very groovy. This is the perfect mixed for a good show.

Jungle Rot arrived on scene unpretentious as if it were a local band. Despite the fact that the group exists since 1995 and is part of the cult American Death Metal bands, the musicians remained very simple and incredibly kind. The charismatic singer-guitarist, Dave Matrise, often addresses the crowd and engages fans who want more.  He has a good and powerful growl. The current guitarist, Geoff Bub, is extremely talented and delivers superb rhythmic and melodic guitar riffs. The bass played by Jemes Genenz is quite present and brings a fatty side to the band's music. The work of new drummer, Joey Muha, behind his bulky machine makes the place vibrates. It was an excellent performance.

The band, who took advantage of a day off from the Mayhem Fest to present its new album, Order Shall Prevail, had to return the same evening to the US to continue with the festival the next day. Despite this, it has delivered a performance with brio and energy. Several songs from the new album have been played, as well as hits from their previous albums. The general sound of Jungle Rot has some type of Trash riffs with savage rhythms, but the band's music can also be described as fun.  Despite the fact that this is the band ninth album, you'd think the Metalheads quartet is having the best time of his life.  What could be better for a fan who wants to be shaken in the pit? It was a very enjoyable evening despite the extreme heat between the 4 walls of the Alizé. There was steam in the place; it was like a sauna so it was hot. Luckily, there was good beer!

Wacken Metal Battle Canada - On road to Wacken

(english will follow)

Wacken Metal Battle Canada – En Route Vers Wacken Open Air

Glen Drover (Megadeth / Testament)

Martin Popoff (BW&BK / HardRadio)

Sarah Lutz (Metal Blade Records)

Noel Peters (Inertia Entertainment)

Adam Sewell (Stereo Dynamite Records / Monster Voodoo Machine)

Rob Urbinati (Sacrifice)

Robb Reiner (Anvil),

Noel Peters (Inertia Entertainment),

Lindsay Schoolcraft (Cradle Of Filth),

Jon Asher (Asher Media Relations),

Adam Sewell (Riot, Rock Management / Stereo Dynamite),

Darrell Shelley (Scene Magazine),

Tim Henderson (BW&BK),

Drew Copland (Villainizer)

Jeff Waters and Mike Harshaw (Annihilator)

Noel Peters (Inertia Entertainment),

Lindsay Schoolcraft (Cradle of Filth),

Tim Henderson (BraveWords)

David Bottrill (Producer, Mixer)

Wacken Metal Battle Canada – On road to Wacken Open Air

Who does not know the Wacken Open Air in Germany, which is considered by the majority of metalheads of the world as being La Mecca of heavy metal? This prestigious festival was launched in late August 1990 and since has grown to become the essential stop of all Europeans festivals, if not of the entire metal planet.Thousands of bands have roamed the Wacken stages and even stunning surprises occurred over the years when bands we thought dead and buried were convinced to resuscitate the time of a single concert at the festival. Some of these groups even chose this opportunity to permanently reform to the delight of fans.

However, there is a feat that the festival has managed to do and that is unique. To bring together several countries in a huge contest called Wacken Metal Battle where some thirty countries organize a national version of the competition and have their bands fighting for a spot on a stage of this prestigious festival, thus getting a chance to make themselves known, discovered and even land a record deal with Nuclear Blast label.

Which band just starting or still completely in the dark after years would not take an opportunity to attract some light on them, then this competition is their chance. This is exactly what happened for Canada in 2013. Our country entered the Wacken legacy by presenting for the first time the Wacken Metal Battle Canada through the initiative of JJ Tartaglia and the help of his partners, allowing our Canadians bands to ultimately show their talents against the thirty countries participating.

One can imagine the logistics behind all this, but if you do not already know, Canada has the second largest territory in the world and stretches nearly 8,000 kilometers from coast to coast. Organize rounds of the competition in every province, set Canadian regional finals and finally gather winners from every parts of the country in one place, that is, at the Opera House in Toronto for the Canadian grand finale that will send a single group Wacken Open Air, is a monstrous job considering the distances.

The first edition was in 2013 and it did not take time that hundreds of groups applied. Whether from British Columbia or Quebec, all dreamed of participating in the final. In many parts of Canada, dozens of groups offered the performance of a lifetime but only five groups were selected. These were Crimson Shadows, Vesperia, Hollow, Dissension, Adrenechrome. Crimson Shadows finally won the honor of representing Canada in Germany, and in a dramatic turn of event, did not just perform at Wacken but actually won the global competition. The first year of the contest, the first group to represent Canada against other countries and a victory, what an honor for Canada!! Crimson Shadows therefore obtained an offer for a record deal with Nuclear Blast but they decline it and they eventually signed with Napalm Records.

Crimson Shadows - Winner of the 2013 final

Here are the judges of the grand finale of the 2013 edition:

Rob Urbinati (Sacrifice)

After Crimson Shadows'victory at Wacken Metal Battle World in Germany, many Canadians bands now see hope to finally perform on a stage of the festival of their dreams. Everything is in motion and now the 2014 edition of the Wacken Metal Battle Canada begins from coast to coast. The battle is fierce and groups of very high quality in all metal styles offer breathtaking performance to earn the privilege to appear in Toronto for the grand finale and thus clinch the ultimate honor of which all dream of. Go play at Wacken Open Air in Germany.

Again, only five groups received their pass for Toronto and this is: Neck of the Woods, My Hollow, Burning the Days, Exit Strategy and Mutank. After a night where each group offered performance worthy of the major leagues, Quebec's Mutank was proclaimed winner of the 2014 edition. And to my surprise when I saw pictures of their performance at Wacken Open Air in Germany they had Quebec-Metal stickers on their helmet, a small token of apreciation from their part but that really touches me. For those who do not know, Mutank have hockeygoaler's helmets from left to right on stage.

Mutank - Winner of the 2014 final

Here are the judges of the grand finale of the 2014 edition:

2015 marks the third edition of this prestigious competition and the organization of the Wacken Metal Batlle Canada decide to make some changes and add cities to the competition list. Quebec City, Victoria, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Ottawa were added, A real strong proof that the popularity of the contest is at its strongest point. Some rules too changed as Quebec now will face Montreal to define the winner of the province as it will be so too for several other provinces. This year there will be six bands that will have the chance to go to the Opera House in Toronto. Right from th start again this year, we can actually see that Canada really has a lot of talent and potential on its metal scene. The whole competition lasted approximately five months to finally identify six different winners of the regional Canadian battles.

Here are the 6 Canadian representatives at the finals which took place on June 6 in Toronto. Vesperia, Endless Chaos, Nordheim, Bleed, Midnight Malice and Medevil. Note that Vesperia was at its second participation in the Canadian grand final and it was finally the good one because Vesperia was crowned winner of the 2015 edition of the Wacken Metal Battle Canada and will proudly represent Canada at the Wacken Metal Battle World to be held in late July, a few days before the actual festival.

Vesperia - Winner of the 2015 final

Here are the judges of the grand finale of the 2015 edition:
Jeff Waters and Mike Harshaw (Annihilator)

Noel Peters (Inertia Entertainment),

Lindsay Schoolcraft (Cradle of Filth),

Tim Henderson (BraveWords)

David Bottrill (Producer, Mixer)

With all these quality bands who performed before us for the last three years (Québec-Métal having been a judge on several occasions in 2014 and 2015), I can tell you that Canada will actually present a lot of extremely talented bands for several years to come at Wacken Open Air and other countries better be truly prepared for them because Canadians bands will take no prisoners or maybe some just to chew on them and spit out the bones.

Now let's talk about the 2015 edition of the Wacken Open Air , which attracts many Canadians year after year. Besides the Wacken Metal Battle World, this year will see the reformation of notorious band Savatage that nobody should miss; it will also be the first time in the festival for the famous Trans-Siberian Orchestra that offers a colorful show with pyrotechnics; there will also be compatriots Annihilator, Cryptopsy, Kataklysm to name a few. Again a monstrous poster that meet every metal styles for the annual Grand-Messe that is the Wacken Open Air.
