Ensiferum, Korpiklaani and Trollfest @ Club Soda
May 22nd 2015
By Isanielle Enright

Friday night was going to be all about folk metal with the arrival of three great European bands in Montreal, bringing along with them a good mix of folk, melodic and death. Drinking horns help high by a horde of LARPists in civilian clothes were common sight at the Club Soda, as the crowd was getting ready for some serious party long before the first band even started.

TrollfesT

The noticeable presence of foam sword bearing folks* started making sense when the first bands made its entrance. With a heavy and varied presence of percussions, Trollmannen and his...well...trollish troop dragged us to the depth of their festive and grotesque musical universe. They even sing in a language they made up from a mix of German and Norwegian! Just look up their cover of Toxic (yep, the Britney Spears song), you will get a pretty good idea of the what and the how this turned into a serious party in a matter of minutes. TrollfesT definitely knows how to warm up a crowd and they left the stage in an uproar of applause.

Korpiklaani

The tempo went down a bit with Korpiklaani making its entrance on stage, who took us away from the trollcavesand brought us into the woods instead with their mythical folk infused music. Travelling out of their native Finland to elevate us through their quasi druidic metal, they kept the crowd focused on them from the first to last note even with a slower paced set list. Their last album, Noita, having been released only recently, I would have thought most songs played would have been news ones, but they also kept a great place for their classic titles apparently well-known of the local crowd. Although their arrangements were at time slower in pace, their presence felt like catching your breath between two storms.

Ensiferum

With the effect of a cold shower, Ensiferum hit the stage to wake up the crowd. We felt immediately that the last part of the evening was going to be heaviest. Always on key with their folk roots, the band was definitely on the faster end of the genre's spectrum and their use of the accordeon felt more rhythmically oriented, giving their sound a crunchier metal twist leaning towards melodic death metal. The crowd was obviously happy to follow the musical crescendo by singing along with the band. Travelling through their discography, from early titles such as Little Dreamer to more recent extracts of their last album, One Man Army, Ensirefum has offered a unique performance, cleverly blending a plethora of musical genres into a well-refined product.
Oh and if you've never heard what disco metal sounds like do yourself a favor and look up Two of Spades from their latest album. It's a funny, smart and quite surprising piece!
