Talamyus n’est pas un nouveau venu sur la scène métal Québécoise, il a vu le jour en 2002 et officie dans un mélange entre le Viking Metal et un Black Death d’excellente facture. Ayant joué avec les plus grands de ce style et plus encore, Talamyus s’est forgé une forte réputation et même une expertise au niveau de ses compositions précédentes.
Fort de 3 albums dont: As Long as it Flows (2005) – …In These Days of Violence (2007) et l’excellent album qu’est Raven’s Call to Annihilation (2011). Il aura fallu 5 ans pour qu’Honour is Our Code, Death is the Reward voit enfin le jour, Ayant moi-même eu la chance d’entendre des brides de ce nouveau rejeton en début 2015, je savais déjà que l’album serait épique et d’une complexité extraordinaire. Mais j’ai maintenant le produit fini entre les mains alors allons décortiquer le tout à l’instant.
Le tout commence par la chanson Victory of Valhalla, une pièce vraiment épique avec ses 10 minutes au compteur. Le début est acoustique. On dirait un hymne parlé très ambiancé, quand même bien rythmé et fortement travaillé. Du côté de la voix, on peut aisément apprécier le mélange entre chant de guerre crié et une voix plus claire. Malgré sa longue durée, ce qui n’est pas habituel pour un album de ce genre, aucun moment faible n’est présent. Des moments plus mélodiques font partie de cette trame vraiment savoureuse. On peut dire que le groupe frappe fort et avec cette pièce, les membres de celui-ci nous démontrent tous leurs talents et on sent qu’on ne s’ennuiera pas avec le reste de l’album. Blood Eagle revient tout en rapidité et avec une certaine noirceur. La voix est criarde, hautement perchée, puissante et pesante à la fois. Du côté de la batterie, nous avons du Blast Beat à souhait et d’une puissance hors de l’ordinaire. Du côté de la guitare, nous avons un excellent mélange de brutalité mais aussi de mélodie. Loki’s Punishment débute de façon plus lourde, quasi Doom avec une belle guitare harmonieuse. Mais vous l’aurez déjà deviné, le groupe n’étant pas Doom, revient très vite à son style d’origine avec une rythmique rapide et fortement dynamique. Durant la pièce il y a plusieurs changements de rythmes mais toujours bien disposés. Une pièce sublime et savoureuse a l’oreille. Hall of the Bravest Souls est un peu plus épique dans sa durée. Ici encore, nous avons un excellent mélange entre rythmique heavy et mélodique du côté de la guitare. Une voix toujours aussi sombre et hautement perchée voir quasi growl, mais audible. Des backs vocals plus clairs apportent une certaine touche majestueuse. Il y a de la guitare acoustique à certains moments. Tous les ingrédients y sont pour que le compte rendu soit parfait et la pièce plaisante d’écoute. Honour to Wotan débute avec une introduction d’un guerrier qui crie probablement pour Odin. La guitare est mélodieuse avec une trame de fond presque cinématographique. On pourrait quasiment penser que cette dernière est une ballade tellement la rythmique est lente. Soudainement une lourdeur prend son envol mélangeant chant crié et chant plus clair, mais gras. Même que cette voix plus grave me fait penser à Peter Steele de Type O Negative, mais cela demeure ma propre interprétation. Encore une fois la mélodie se marie à merveille avec un rythme nettement plus rapide et sombre à la fois. Du côté de la guitare, c’est la même chose, on peut avoir droit à une débauche de rythmiques effrénées et ensuite revenir avec des accords nettement plus mélodieux. Nine Nights (Odin’s Sacrifice) est nettement plus Black et rapide. La voix est sombre et hautement perchée, mais très dynamique. Encore il y a d’excellents changements de rythmes entre lenteur et rapidité. Abode of Myst est une pièce entièrement instrumentale très courte avec ses deux minutes au compteur, mais elle est vraiment charmante. Je pourrais quasiment dire une qu’il s’agit d’une pièce semi acoustique qui nous transporte allégrement vers la chanson Jormungang qui elle revient vite au métal sombre et rapide que Talamyus nous a présenté depuis le début de l’album. Ici, nous avons encore le droit à un bon mélange vocal entre le chant de guerre crié et la voix plus basse et sombre. Il y a du blast beat bien fait. Toute la sauce y est. Bring the Weak to Their Knees continu dans la lancer de la rapidité et sans compromis, encore une fois, le guitariste nous démontre tout son talent avec le mélange de rythmes brutaux et de mélodiques. Plusieurs changements de rythmiques sur cette chanson extrêmement bien pensés. I Bow to No Man est l’avant dernière chanson de l’album et encore là, nous avons aucun répit. Elle est heavy à souhait et il y a plusieurs changements de rythmes sur cette dernière. Par contre si on écoute bien la pièce, on y ressentira un côté plus black ‘n roll à certain endroit, ce qui n’est pas désagréable. On termine l’album avec la chanson Until Death, We Ride. Quelle belle façon de terminer un album avec une chanson puissante,sombre et extrêmement heavy. Une pièce taillée sur mesure pour la scène, alors préparez vous à headbanger à souhait.
Il n’est pas aisé de faire la critique de cet album, non pas parce qu’il est mauvais au contraire, c’est dû au fait que c’est un album avec plusieurs variantes; tantôt mélodique, tantôt brutal et rapide, lorgnant entre le Black et le Death et à certains moments, il y a même des passages plus progressifs. Ici Talamyus aura prit trois ans pour nous pondre un album grandement travaillé. Certaines pièces sont vraiment longues et jamais on ressent un temps mort ou une perte de vitesse dans l’ambiance et le rythme de ses compositions. La guitare est puissante et très mélodieuse en même temps. Du côté de la batterie, on ressent aisément une rythmique rapide, mais tout en contrôle. Les back vocals sont bien placés et interprétés. Pour ce qui est de la voix principale, il s’agit d’une voix hautement perchée et criarde, mais jamais désagréable.
Honour is Our Code, Death is the Reward est un grand hymne à l’histoire des dieux scandinaves et même s’il a fallu cinq ans pour l’entendre, l’attente en aura valu la peine, car nous avons droit à ce qui peut se faire de mieux en matière de Viking Metal. C’est une œuvre magistrale à se procurer d’urgence pour tous les amateur de ce style.

Talamyus is not new on the Quebec metal scene, it emerged in 2002 and officiates in a mix of Viking Metal and Black Death Metal of excellent quality. Having played with the greatest of this style and more,Talamyus has built a strong reputation and even an expertise with its previous compositions.
With three albums such as: As Long as it Flows (2005) - ... In These Days of Violence (2007) and the excellent album is Raven's Call to Annihilation (2011), it took 5 years for the album Honour is Our Code, Death is the Reward to finally see the day. I had a chance to hear the flanges of this new offspring in early 2015, so I already knew that the album would be epic and with extraordinary complexity. But I now have the finished product in my hands so let's dissect it all piece by piece now.
It begins with the song Victory of Valhalla, a really epic song with its 10 minutes on the clock. It has an acoustic start. We can almost say it’s a spoken hymn which is very atmospheric and still has good rhythm is a strong piece of work. On the side of the voice, we can easily appreciate the mixture between the song warrior scream and clear voice. Despite that the song is long, which is not usual for an album like this, no dead time is present. More melodic moments are part of this song and are really tasty. You could say the band hits hard with that first song. The band members demonstrate their talents and we feel like we won’t get bored with the rest of the album. Blood Eagle returns with speed and with a certain darkness. The voice is highly perched, powerful and heavy at the same time. On the side of the drums, there is blast beat like desired and it has power out of the ordinary. On the guitar side, it has a great mixture of brutality but also of melody. Loki's Punishment begins with more strength, almost in a Doom Metal style with a nice smooth guitar. But you will have already guessed, since the band is not Doom, it returns quickly to its original style with fast and highly dynamic rhythmical. In the piece, there are several changes of pace but always well done. A sublime and tasty piece to listen. Hall of the Bravest Souls is somewhat epic in duration. Again, it is an excellent mix between heavy and melodic rhythms on the side of the guitar. The voice is still dark and highly perched almost in a growl, but audible. The clearer back vocals brings backs some majestic component. There is acoustic guitar at some places in the songs. All ingredients are there for a perfect record and a pleasant listening. Honour to Wotan begins with an introduction of a warrior who probably cries out for Odin. The guitar is melodious with an almost cinematic shading. We could almost think that it is a ballad so the rhythm is slow. But heaviness suddenly takes off mixing scream and clearer but fat vocals . This deep voice reminds me of Peter Steele from Type O Negative, but of course it’s my own interpretation. Again the melody goes perfectly with a much faster pace and dark at once. On the guitar side, it is the same, you may be entitled to a bawdy frantic rhythm and then come back with much more melodious riffs. Nine Nights (Odin's Sacrifice) is much faster and has a Black, dark and highly perch but very dynamic voice . It has great change of pace from slow and high speed. Abode of Myst is a completely instrumental piece and is very short with its two minutes on the clock but it is really charming. I might say it’s a semi acoustic piece that takes us briskly toward Jormungang song. We are back to the dark and fast metal that Talamyus presented us from the beginning of the album. Here we still have the right to a good mix of vocal singing with warrior screams and dark voice. There is good blast beat as well. Everything is there. Bring the Weak to Their Knees continues in the launch of speed and uncompromisingly. Again, the guitarist shows us all his talent with the pace mixture from brutal to melodious. There are several changes of rhythm in this song which is extremely well thought out. I Bow to No Man is the penultimate song of the album and yet, we have no respite. It is heavy at will and there are several changes of pace on this last piece. If you listen carefully to the song, you will feel its black 'n roll side at certain places which is not unpleasant. The album ends with the song Until Death, We Ride. What a way to finish an album with a powerful ,dark and extremely heavy song. A custom cut piece for the stage, so prepare yourself for headbanging at will.
It is not easy to criticize this album not because it is bad, but rather because it's an album with several variants. It is sometimes melodic,sometimes brutal and fast, peeping between Black and Death Metal and sometime even has more progressive passages. Talamyus took three years to bring us a well worked album. Some pieces are really long and we never feel a dead moment or a loss of momentum in the mood and pace of the compositions. The guitar is very powerful and melodic at the same time. On the side of the drums, we easily feel the fast but in control rhythm. The back vocals are well interpreted and bring dimension to the main voice which is highly perch and shrill but never unpleasant.
Honour is Our Code, Death is the Reward Anthem is a great Scandinavian gods story and although it took five years to hear it, the wait was worth it because here, we are treated to what can be done best in Viking Metal. It is a masterful work that any fan of this style must procure right away .
